Iran has reportedly shot down an RQ-4 Global Hawk over Kuh Mubarak, the coastal area around the entrance to the Straights of Hormuz.
According to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp on their news website, the aircraft was shot down due to having violated Iranian airspace. A grainy photo was posted which appears to show the drone tumbling to earth having lost a wing (see below)
It is currently not known which variant of the aircraft was involved in the incident, with unverified reports stating that it was an MQ-4N Triton, the version used by the US Navy for maritime surveillance. It would make sense for it to be a Triton due to the current tensions following attacks on shipping within the region, with the US currently placing a high emphasis on the protection of oil tankers through the Straights.
