An Air India flight from Mumbai to Newark, New Jersey was yesterday diverted into Stansted Airport following the airline receiving a bomb threat.
AI191 turned back over the Isle of Man and was intercepted by RAF Typhoon aircraft from the Southern QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) at RAF Coningsby. The fighter aircraft were cleared supersonic during the mission.
It has been confirmed by the airline that they received the bomb threat via email to Mumbai airport. The airline have since confirmed the threat was a hoax.
The flight, with 327 passengers aboard landed at Stansted at around 1015 Local time (0915Z) and was parked away from other aircraft. The flight finally continued on its way at 2130 local time (2030Z).
